New Israel-Hezbollah Fighting in Lebanon
New Israel-Hezbollah Fighting in Lebanon
Following an attempted Hezbollah infiltration into Israel from Lebanon, Israeli military forces launched retaliatory strikes on Hezbollah targets on August 26.
Israeli government representatives said that Israeli troops along the border took fire from Hezbollah forces attempting to insert between two United Nations posts. Israel said there were no casualties on their side.
Per Israel’s policy of retaliation, Israeli forces fired on Hezbollah positions inside the Lebanese border, using helicopter gunships and warplanes.
Israel and Hezbollah clashed about a month ago along the Lebanon-Golan border, and this also comes amidst nearly two weeks of clashes on Israel’s southern border with Hamas-ruled Gaza.
Hezbollah is a Lebanese political party with its own army, and is a major player in Lebanese politics. This incident comes only weeks after the massive Beirut explosion that has shaken the Lebanese political system to its foundations.
Israel and Hezbollah fought a 34-day war in 2006 that claimed thousands of lives, and many analysts expect another major war at some point between Hezbollah and Israel.
From Elad Strohmayer, an Israeli diplomat:
WATCH: The area of the attempted #Hezbollah attack from last night, in close proximity to 2 @UN posts. We hold the Lebanese govt fully responsible for all security incidents emanating from #Lebanon & any attempted violation of Israeli sovereignty will be met with great severity. pic.twitt/er.com/hpWicrsaWt
