June 30, 2014-American troops take control of the Baghdad Airport to protect it from Islamic State forces. It is announced that more U.S. military personnel are arriving to train and advise Iraqi forces.
July 4, 2014-U.S. Special Forces attempt to rescue American hostage James Foley by attacking an Islamic State base near Raqqah, Syria.
August 7, 2014-President Obama announces U.S. military intervention in Iraq for humanitarian reasons and to protect U.S. forces in the area.
August 13, 2014-U.S. deploys 130 more military advisers to Northern Iraq.
August 14, 2014-Britain publicly acknowledges that SAS special forces units are in Northern Iraq.
August 16, 2004-President Obama notifies Congress that that he would now also be using American power to protect Iraqi infrastructure and to pursue ISIS.
August 19, 2014-ISIS releases a video showing the beheading of American hostage James Foley.
August 20, 2014- Nearly 20 U.S. Marines and Special Forces troops landed on Mount Sinjar inV-22 aircraft to coordinate the evacuation of Yazidi refugees.
August 26, 2014-The U.S. begins reconnaissance flights over Syria to track ISIS forces.
As of the end of August, 2014, the U.S. Department of Defense reported 123 airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq.
September 2, 2014-ISIS releases a video showing the beheading of another American hostage, Steven Sotloff.
September 3, 2014-the U.S. announces an increase of 350 servicemen sent to Baghdad, increasing U.S. forces in Baghdad to 820, and increasing U.S. forces in Iraq to 1,213.
September 10, 2014-President Obama announces that about 500 more troops will be sent to Iraq to help train Iraqi forces. He again reiterates that he does not intend to engage in ground combat.
September 13, 2014- ISIS releases a video showing the beheading of British hostage, David Haines.
September 19, 2014- French military aircraft conduct airstrikes on ISIS targets, beginning the French combat operarations in the ISIS War.
September 22, 2014-United States and Allied Arab nations (Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE, and Qatar) launch air and missile strikes on ISIS/ISIL targets inside Syria. The U.S. also attacks eight targets associated with the Khorasan Group, an al-Qaida cell.
