New Star Trek Show is Announced: Starfleet Academy

As announced on Startrek.com, CBS/Paramount is touting a NEW Star Trek TV show called “Starfleet Academy.”

The announement, coming on the heels of the end of the SAG/AFTRA strike (is this coincidence, or strategicly intentional?), the announcement is short on details. No mention of the actors or major plot details, though it is mentioned that the creators are co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau.

The announcement includes the following statement about Starfleet Academy:

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today! Ex Astris, Scientia!”

The phrase “for the first time in over a century” leads us to believe that this show is a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, which now takes place in the far future.  When last we saw Starfleet officer Sylvia Tilly (played by Mary Wiseman), leading a group of young cadets.  She clearly will be the lead in re-starting a defunct Starfleet Academy.

This should be an interesting show, especially since it appears to be a continuation of Discovery, which is entering its fifth and final season. We look forward to more information on this new Star Trek show.
