What is China’s Endgame?

“Hey, everyone, Welcome back to Current Events on Wars and Conflicts of the World, by Historyguy.com!
Today’s focus is on China and Sudan.
Sudan’s civil war is tearing the country apart, and China’s role in it is raising eyebrows. Let’s dive into what’s happening in 2025, with insights from Financial Times and Amnesty International!
Since April 2023, Sudan’s been locked in a brutal conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Thousands have died, millions made homeless, and 25 million face famine. China’s officially neutral, but here’s where it gets murky.
In January 2025, China donated 1,250 tons of food aid to Sudan, aiming to ease the humanitarian crisis. Sounds good, right? But Amnesty International says China’s also fueling the war!
Amnesty’s May 2025 report found Chinese-made weapons—like Norinco GB50A guided bombs and drones—used by the RSF in Darfur, violating a UN arms embargo. These bombs were re-exported by the UAE and used in a deadly March 2025 drone strike killing 13 civilians!
The Financial Times reported on May 10, 2025, that UAE-backed RSF used Chinese drones to hit Port Sudan, violating the embargo. China’s state-owned Norinco Group didn’t respond to Amnesty’s queries, and China claims it’s just protecting its Belt and Road investments.
Known in China as the One Belt One Road and sometimes referred to as the New Silk Road, is a Chinese economic and development strategy to invest in more than 150 countries and international organizations. The goal: to boost China economically, while also making China into a player on the world scene.
China’s strategy in Sudan? Secure Red Sea trade routes while staying ‘neutral.’ But supplying weapons to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which arms the RSF, escalating the conflict, says Amnesty. Both sides are using Chinese tech like drone jammers, artillery, killer drones, and mortars, resulting in the deaths of thousands.
