Darcy Gibbons Burner- (b. Nov. 12, 1970)
Darcy Burner is a Democratic Congressional candidate attempting to unseat incumbent Republican representative Dave Reichert. The 2008 election is her second campaign against Reichert.
Darcy Burner was born in Alaska in 1979, and adopted at birth by the Gibbons family, who took her to Nebraska and raised her in farming country in a Republican household.
Darcy Gibbons attended Harvard, graduating in 1996 with a B.A. in computer science and economics. Her jobs included working for Lotus Development, Asymetrix, and, starting in 2000, as a lead product manager for Microsoft .NET.
Darcy Gibbons married Michael Burner in 1993. and their son Henry was born in 2003. On July 1, 2008, an electrical malfunction caused a fire which destroyed Burner's home on Ames Lake, Washington.
Darcy Burner announced her candidacy to unseat first-term U.S. Representative Dave Reichert in the 8th District in Washington in September of 2005. She lost the 2006 general election to Dave Reichert, but is attempting to win the Democratic nomination for another attempt at Reichert's seat in the 2008 election.
Darcy Burner worked as a volunteer in the unsuccessful congressional campaign of radio personality Dave Ross for Washington's 8th congressional district against King County Sheriff Dave Reichert of Auburn. Reichert won his first term in Congress by beating Ross, but then in 2006, Darcy Burner, a Democrat, ran against Reichert, losing a close race to the incumbent freshman Repbulican (Reichert won 51.5 percent of the vote).
Darcy Burner decided to again challenge Dave Reichert for the 8th district seat in the 2008 election. In 2007, Burner began her second race for Congress, and made headlines by highlighting Reichert's reliance on President Bush for campaign fund-raising by holding a virtual town hall to protest Bush's visit. See Burner to stage "virtual" town hall to counter Bush visit at the Seattle PI website.
Burner's political platform includes a call to get the U.S. out of the War in Iraq, and has a plan, formed with other Democratic candidates, called the "Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq." Burner also seeks to make health care more affordable for Americans.
Burner's main rival for the 2008 Democratic primary election was State Senator Rodney Tom. Tom dropped out of the race on September 5, 2007, largely because Burner proved much more effective at raising campaign money, largely through the internet. Rodney Tom endorsed Burner, and encouraged his supporters to back Burner against Dave Reichert. Following Burner's ascendency over Rodney Tom, the women's political action group, EMILY's List, endorsed her campaign on November 26, 2007.
