Thena of the Eternals (Angelina Jolie)

Major Female Members of the Eternals

The Eternals movie is now in the theaters, and this movie features a ton of new characters for us to get to know.  Among the Eternals are three powerful women who each have unique abilities.  Before we get into who they are and what they are capable of doing, be sure to check out our mostly positive movie review of the Eternals.

The first of our female Eternals we look at is Sersi, played by Gemma Chan.  Sersi first comic book appearance was in The Eternals #3 (September 1976).  Her powers include transmutation of matter (i.e. she can turn water to rock, rock to ice, etc.).  Gemma Chan, prior to Eternals, is probably best known for her role in Crazy Rich Asians.  In many respects, Sersi is the primary female protagonist in the movie.

Thena of the Eternals

Next we have Thena, played by the incomparable Angelina Jolie.  Thena is the Eternals version of the Goddess of War, with powerful fighting skills and a somewhat insane aspect that makes her very dangerous.  Thena’s first comic book appearance was in The Eternals #5 (November 1976)

Ajak of the Eternals

Now we come to Ajak, played superbly by Selma Hayak.  Ajak is the healer of the Eternals, and, for at least part of the movie, is the leader of these super powered cosmic beings.  The character of Ajak first appeared in comics in Eternals #2 (Aug. 1976), but as originally envisioned and created by Jack “King” Kirby, Ajak was a male Eternal.  We think that the Marvel Cinematic Universe did us all a huge favor by making Ajak female, and giving us the beautiful Selma Hayak!

Go see Eternals. But be sure to use the restroom first…it is a two and a half hours of Marvel Cinematic Universe action!
