George John Tenet - (b. Jan. 5, 1953)--Director of the CIA from 1997 to 2004.
George J. Tenet is a former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which is perhaps the best known of America's various spy agencies. His tenure as the Director spanned two presidencies. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton, and served under President George W. Bush through the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He left the CIA on July 11, 2004, as controversy over the war in Iraq grew to include serious questions about the role that Tenet and the CIA played in shaping the intelligence information regarding Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction and the run up to the invasion.
George J. Tenet was sworn in as the Director of Central Intelligence on July 11, 1997, after serving as the Deputy Director of Central Intelligence. Tenet became the Acting Director following after John Mark Deutch left the agency in December, 1996.
His tenure as the Director of the CIA heavily involved him in the War on Terror, even prior to 9/11. Al-Qaida started to become a danger to the U.S. in the mid-1990s, and, after the Embassy bombings in 1998, became a major threat, prompting the U.S. to retaliate by bombing terrorist bases in Afghanistan. Tenet has been criticized for not doing more to stop al-Qaida prior to 9/11.
After the September 11 attacks, the CIA took a leading role in ousting the Taliban and al-Qaida from power in Afghanistan and also played a significant role in planning and justifying the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Tenet's book on his time at the CIA and the controversies surrounding the wars fought by the CIA and America in his time in office stirred controversy when the New York Times acquired an advance copy of the book (At the Center of the Storm: My Years at the CIA)in late April, 2007.
Tenet is of Greek descent, with his mother originating in a Greek-speaking region of southern Albania, and his father from Greece.
