The U.S. War on Terror (September 11, 2001-Present): On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four American airliners and crashed three of them into buildings which represented the heart of American commerce and military might.

President George W. Bush soon declared a "Global War on Terror" was underway, and the United States, along with several allies, invaded Afghanistan, then under the control of the Islamic-Fundamentalist Taliban. The Taliban had given refuge to Osama bin-Laden's al-Qaida network, and this made Afghanistan the first campaign in America's War on Terror.
