The Avengers Movie
In the comic books published by Marvel in the 1960s, the Avengers were formed by Ant-Man, Wasp, Thor, Iron Man, and The Hulk (Captain America did not join until issue #4, although he is considered an honorary founding member of the team). The Avengers' constantly changing roster brought many of the Marvel Universe heroes onboard, although the Avenger's original goal remains consistent: the Avengers fight the foes no single superhero can withstand thus their famous battle cry, "Avengers Assemble!" The comic book team has included non-powered humans, mutants, androids, robots, gods, aliens, supernatural beings, and even former super-villains.
The Avengers Movie, however, which was released to the general public on May 4, 2012 by Marvel Studios, takes a different track in how the superhero team comes together. While in the comics, the Avengers more or less fell into a being a team to battle a common foe (Thor's pesky brother, Loki), the movie version of the Avengers origin story takes a more deliberate and purposeful track.
The first Marvel Studios movie to form the link of films in which the Avengers are first hinted at, came in the Iron Man and Incredible Hulk movies, both released in 2008. At the end of Iron Man, in the now-famous after-credits scene that is a feature of all recent Marvel films, Samuel L. Jackson, portraying Colonel Nick Fury, meets with Tony Stark/Iron Man (superbly played by Robert Downey Jr.), and first mentions "The Avengers Initiative." At the end of the Incredible Hulk film, Tony Stark walks into a bar and discusses with General Thunderbolt Ross, a group that may be able to track down the Hulk.
Other films that lead directly to the new Avengers Movie include Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), and Captain America (2011).
