The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games (2012)--Is a movie set in the future, in which the society we know has collapsed, devestated by famine, drought, and war to be replaced by a country called Panem,which is divided between the Capitol and 12 "Districts." As a method of social control over the masses, the Capitol selects two youngsters from each district, selected via lottery, to participate in what are known as "The Hunger Games." These televised games are shown throughout Panem. In the Hunger Games, the 24 participants must kill their competitors, while all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take the sister's place. Katniss and her male counterpart from her District, Peeta, are to be matched against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for the Hunger Games their whole lives. The Hunger Games film is based on a popular book of the same title by Suzanne Collins.
The Hunger Games took in $155 million to claim the spot as third most successful film (in terms of dollars), for an opening weekend in movie history.
