Review
Batman Begins, is the first installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman/Dark Knight trilogy, the success of which led to the hugely popular Dark Knight film in 2008 starring Heath Ledger as an insanely evil Joker, and leading to 2012's The Dark Knight Rises. In Batman Begins, Batman, played by Christian Bale, begins his career as a masked vigilante in battle with The Scarecrow and Bruce Wayne's former mentor, the cunning Ras al Ghul.As with any superhero origin film, a significant portion of the film focuses on the the why and the how of Batman's creation. Director Christopher Nolan deftly retells the well-known 70-year old origin tale of how Bruce Wayne witnessed his parents' murder, and cleverly ties that murder into the overall theme of decay and the power of organized crime to darken a city's present and to threaten that city's future. Michael Caine's turn as the loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth, brings new depth and a humorous dimension to a sometimes ignored and little understood member of the Batman Family.
As with any Batman tale, the selections from Batman's large Rogues Gallery help provide the challenge for our Dark Knight. In Batman Begins, we see three Batman villains (four if you count Joe Chill, the killer who offed the Wayne parents). We have Victor Zsasz, a serial killer who really only has cameo appearnces in court and in Arkham Asylum; The Scarecrow, an evil psychiatrist working in Arkham on behalf (Jonathan Crane), and Liam Neeson as Ra's al Ghul, Bruce Wayne's mentor and the mastermind behind the League of Shadows.
