Arnold Schwarzenegger

(b. 1947)

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (b. July 30, 1947), the bodybuilder turned Hollywood action figure, turned politician, is an Austrian immigrant to the United States who built a fortune on his celebrity, married into the Kennedy family, and then famously separated from his wife after a well-publicized sex scandal.

Schwarzenegger turned to bodybuilding at an early age (15), and by the age of 20, won the Mr. Universe bodybuilding title. He also won the Mr. Olympia title several times. Arnold Schwarzenegger moved to the United States in 1968 at the age of 21. His goal at this point was to continue his bodybuilding as an avenue to get into acting.

Schwarzenegger began his acting career in 1970, appearing as Hercules in the film Hercules in New York. However, it was appearance in the bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron in 1977 propelled him to the popular consciousness. He appeared in several other films, but his first big hit as a screen actor breakthrough film was the sword-and-sorcery fantasy, Conan the Barbarian, in 1982. Arnold Schwarzenegger's career as a Hollywood action hero was cemented in 1984 as he played the title role in the James Cameron science-fiction epic, The Terminator.

Arnold Schwarzenegger first met his wife, Maria Shriver, at a Kennedy-sponsored political event in 1977. They married in 1986 and now have four children. They separated in early 2011.

Schwarzenegger's movie career continued as one of the top male action heroes in Hollywood. He occassionally forayed into comedy, as in such films as Twins, Junior, and Kindergarten Cop.

Schwarzenegger, like several other action movie stars (Bruce Willis, Tom Selleck, Clint Eastwood), held political views generally considered more conservative than Hollywood as a whole. In 1985, Schwarzenegger appeared in Stop the Madness, an anti-drug music video sponsored by the conservative Reagan administration. Schwazenegger came out publicly as a Republican during the 1988 Presidential election, accompanying then-Vice President George H.W. Bush at a campaign rally.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's public political philosophy was cemented by his speech at the 2004 Republican National Convention, where Schwarzenegger spoke to a national audience and explained why he was a Republican:

"I finally arrived here in 1968. What a special day it was. I remember I arrived here with empty pockets but full of dreams, full of determination, full of desire. The presidential campaign was in full swing. I remember watching the Nixon-Humphrey presidential race on TV. A friend of mine who spoke German and English translated for me. I heard Humphrey saying things that sounded like socialism, which I had just left.

But then I heard Nixon speak. He was talking about free enterprise, getting the government off your back, lowering the taxes and strengthening the military. Listening to Nixon speak sounded more like a breath of fresh air. I said to my friend, I said, "What party is he?" My friend said, "He's a Republican." I said, "Then I am a Republican." And I have been a Republican ever since."

As early as 1999, Schwarzenegger discussed his potential future as a political candidate. During the 2003 California Recall-Election of 2003, Schwarzenegger announced his candidacy for Governor of California on the August 6, 2003 episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On October 7, 2003, the recall election resulted in Governor Gray Davis being removed from office with 55.4% of the "Yes" vote in favor of a recall. Schwarzenegger was elected Governor of California under the second question on the ballot with 48.6% of the vote to choose a successor to Davis. He became the first foreign-born California governor since the Civil War era.

Since the California constitution limits governors to only two terms, Arnold Schwarzenegger left office in January of 2011, and soon announed that he would return to acting. In May, 2011, the Los Angeles Times confronted him with a story they were going to run about an illegitimate child he allegedly fathered with a member of his family's household staff. Schwarzenegger then admitted that he had fathered that child. The media soon revealed that the child's mother was Mildred Baena, who had served as the housekeeper in the Schwarzenegger-Shriver household for 20 years.

On July 1, 2011, Maria Shriver filed divorce papers seeking to end her 26 year marriage to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In his first credited film role since leaving office and since his marital issues came to light, Arnold Schwarzenegger starred along with other action movie stars in The Expendables 2, released in August, 2012. He reprises his role as Trent Mauser alongside Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Jean Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, and other veteran action heroes. When Schwarzenegger appeared at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con with Stallone, he received a huge ovation from the crowd of science-fiction and action film fans in attendance.

In the autumn of 2012, Arnold Schwarzenegger's new memoir details how he told Maria Shriver about how he fathered that boy with the housemaid, and why he hid the truth from Maria. In this new memoir, titled "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story," Schwarzenegger also confirmed a rumor that he and Brigitte Nielson (former wife of Expendables co-star Sly Stallone), had engaged in an "outrageous affair" while filming the move Red Sonja.
