Due to his family's connections, as well as his mother's status as a designer of fashion blue jeans, it should be no surprise that Anderson himself modeled with Ford Models for brands such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Macy's between the ages of 10 to 13. In July, 2012, Anderson Cooper came out as a gay man when he wrote in a letter to his friend, Daily Beast columnist and gay rights activist Andrew Sullivan, "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud." Cooper gave permission for Sullivan to publish his comments in his column, giving the reason for his coming out as a message to other gay men and boys who suffer from bullying and the feeling that they should be afraid to tell the world they are gay.

Anderson Cooper also said, "I love, and I am loved. In my opinion, the ability to love another person is one of God's greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life," he said. "I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn't mean an end to a small amount of personal space. But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter's shield of privacy."
