The Wasp- (Janet Van Dyne) --1st appearance: Tales to Astonish #44 (June 1963). The Wasp is an American superhero whose powers come from the "Pym Particles" invented by her ex-husband, Henry Pym. The Wasp can reduce herself to insect-size as well as to gian-size. When she is insect-sized, the Wasp can fly by means of insect-like wings (which appear only when she is reduced in size), and she can fire bio electric energy blasts, and she can communicate and direct insects. She is a founding member of the superhero group "The Avengers," and is known as a fashion resource for superheros in need of new costumes. In her civilian identity, (the public at large is aware that Janet Van Dyne is the Wasp), she is a socialite fashion designer. She holds the unofficial superhero record for wearing the widest variety of alternate costumes. While as an Avenger, she counts among her enemies the whole of the Avengers Rogues Gallery of Villians, her personal nemesis is The Whirlwind, (originally called The Human Top), a mutant with super-speed powers. The Whirlwind is somewhat mentally unstable, and has an erotic fascination with the Wasp.
