{"id":204,"date":"2021-12-19T19:00:23","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T03:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/?p=204"},"modified":"2022-12-19T13:53:40","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T21:53:40","slug":"the-villains-of-spider-man-no-way-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/the-villains-of-spider-man-no-way-home\/","title":{"rendered":"The Villains of Spider-Man: No Way Home"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do We Really See the Sinister Six on Screen?<\/h2>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A lot has already been said about the new Spider-Man film.\u00a0 There are reviews galore about the special guest appearances, and the cameos, and the \u201csurprise\u201d stars who show up.\u00a0 This review is not about that.\u00a0 This review is about the villains and antagonists of Spider-Man: No Way Home.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">To discuss our villainous bad guys properly, there must be discussion of the film\u2019s details, thus, yes\u2026there are SPOILERS\u00a0 here. Just to be sure everyone understands this. If you are reading this right now and have NOT seen the Spider-Man movie, go see it first, and then read this. You can thank me later.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, on with the show.\u00a0 If you have seen the movie, you know that due to some inter-dimensional, multiversal, hocus-pocus by Doctor Strange, an unintentional rift opens up that pulls in heroes and villains from other universes.\u00a0 Specifically, from the other two Sony films Spider-Man universes plus at least one other, as we realized in the after-credits scene.\u00a0 We have villains from the Toby McGuire films (er, I mean Universe), in the form of Willem Dafoe\u2019s <\/span><b>Green Goblin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Doctor Octopus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Sandman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 We also get villains from Andrew Garfield\u2019s Spider-Verse, as we encounter the <\/span><b>Lizard <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Electro<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 In the end-credits scene we also realize that Eddie Brock, AKA <\/span><b>Venom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was also pulled into the MCU-Verse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">A lot of fans were hoping to see a villain team-up that could be considered a version of The Sinister Six, but in this movie, only five villains teamed to battle Spider-Man.\u00a0 However, in our opinion, there WAS a sixth villain, and it was so obvious as to be subtle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But first, what was the original Sinister Six group in the comics?\u00a0 In the pages of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Amazing Spider-Man Annua<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l #1 (January 1964), Doctor Octopus gathers together a group of villains who have all seen defeat at the hands of the Wall-Crawler.\u00a0 Joining Doc Ock are Electro, Sandman, the <\/span><b>Vulture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Kraven the Hunter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Mysterio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_205\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/the-villains-of-spider-man-no-way-home\/sinister-six-comics\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-205\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-205\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-205\" src=\"https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Sinister-Six-comics-300x133.jpg\" alt=\"The Sinister Six\" width=\"300\" height=\"133\" srcset=\"https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Sinister-Six-comics-300x133.jpg 300w, https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Sinister-Six-comics.jpg 349w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-205\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sinister Six<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\">As we examine all three Spider-Man franchises, we can identify Electro, Doctor Octopus, and Sandman from the original comics version of the Sinister Six.\u00a0 The Vulture is in the MCU already, but he, played superbly by Michael \u201cBatman\u201d Keaton, is presumably still in prison, and thus unavailable.\u00a0 Kraven has not appeared in any movies so far, and Mysterio died in the last MCU Spider-Man movie (or so we are led to believe).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also have another antagonist of Peter Parker in the film, though to call him a super-villain would be a stretch.\u00a0 We, of course, are talking about <\/span><b>J. Jonah Jameson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the media personality who effectively calls out Spider-Man\u2019s secret identity, which is the cause of the whole plot-line that leads Peter to seek out Dr. Strange\u2019s mystic help in the first place, and then leads to all of this multiversal carnage.\u00a0 Can we count J. Jonah Jameson as our sixth villain to round out our Sinister Six?\u00a0 Much as we would like to, JJJ does not rise to the same level of villainy as Green Goblin.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back on the original comics lineup of the Sinister Six, we have not yet mentioned Mysterio. Wait, he died in the last movie, right?\u00a0 As far as we know, yes.\u00a0 BUT, he is the first villain we actually see in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-man: No Way Home<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as Jameson plays the video that Mysterio recorded prior to his death, in which he, Mysterio, reveals that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.\u00a0 Satisfying though it may be to blame Jameson for the chaos and violence in this film, the blame really belongs to Mysterio.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_206\" style=\"width: 178px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/the-villains-of-spider-man-no-way-home\/sinister-six-modern\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-206\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-206\" class=\"size-full wp-image-206\" src=\"https:\/\/historyguy.com\/comicshistory\/superheroreviews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Sinister-Six-modern.jpg\" alt=\"The Sinister Six, Enemies of Spider-Man\" width=\"168\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sinister Six, Enemies of Spider-Man<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><b><i>Mysterio is our sixth member of this multiversal Sinister Six<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Think about it. Mysterio\u2019s whole mode of operation, both in the comics and in the movies, is misdirection and illusion.\u00a0 In his dying words, he lies and claims Spider-Man is the villain, and is a murderer.\u00a0 He sets up the grand illusion that Peter Parker is a criminal.\u00a0 Mysterio\u2019s lies set up the gathering of the villains (though to be fair, that really falls on Peter and Strange for screwing up the forgetfulness spell).\u00a0 However, Mysterio\u2019s plan was to create an illusion that would ruin Spider-Man\u2019s life.\u00a0 Fair to say that he succeeded on multiple levels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There you have it folks, our <\/span><b>Sinister Six<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Mysterio, Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, the Lizard, Electro, and Sandman.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here is our own post-credits thought:\u00a0 If Venom (who as we see at the end of the second Venom movie, is connected in a hive-mind like manner to all other Venom symbiotes in the multiverse, and thus was aware that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, then what about <\/span><b>Carnage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0 The symbiote that created Carnage was at one point connected to the Venom symbiote. Should that mean that the Strange spell that gathered heroes and villains who know Peter Parker is Spider-Man, also brought in Carnage?\u00a0 Even though Dr. Strange sent all those characters back to their home dimension, we see a spot of black Venom Symbiote left behind when Eddie Brock is sent back. Could something similar have happened to a Carnage symbiote?\u00a0 We shall see\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do We Really See the Sinister Six on Screen?
