The X-Men- --1st appearance: X-Men #1 (September, 1963)
The X-Men are a team of super-powered mutants who fight on behalf of the idea that mutants (homo superior) and the majority non-mutant humans (homo sapiens) can live in peace and equality. Opposing this ideal are various mutant and mutant organizations, such as Magneto and his Brotherhood of (Evil) Mutants. The X-Men team lineup changes often, but usually consists of certain key core members, such as Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, Jean Grey (Marvel Girl/Phoenix), Storm, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and, of course, the founder of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier.
Professor Charles Xavier (Professor X), is a mutant with powerful mental and telepathic abilities. He saw a need to bring together several young mutants and form them into a team of super-heroes dedicated to protecting society from other mutants who sought dominion over normal humanity.
Seeking to help humanity with their natural super-powered abilities, they took the name X-Men (for the X-Factor in their genes that gives them mutant abilities), and embarked on a path to fight on behalf of a humanity that all too oftem wished them harm and gave them discrimination and hatred.
